Dynamite Maps Contest #3 [DM03]

[UPDATE] The Dynamite Maps Contest #3 has now ended. We have tabulated the votes, crunched the numbers, and have posted the results.

Read the complete contest summary.

After a successful DM01 and DM02, we have been waiting for the right time to kick off our third contest. Well, with the recent release of the iPhone version of Dynamite Jack and the long weekend (here in the States) we figured this is the perfect time to announce DM03! We hope you are as excited as we are. The theme for this contest is “ARCHITECTURE”. Feel free to interpret the theme however you see fit. We can’t wait to see the maps that you come up with!

If you’re interested in participating in this contest, be sure to use the contest tag in all submissions [DM03] and follow the contest rules.

Timeline

  • The contest has already begun (September 1st, 12:00 AM PDT).
  • The contest ends in just over two weeks at midnight (September 18th, 12:00 AM PDT).
  • Judging for the People’s Choice Award will end one week after the submission deadline (September 25st, 12:00 AM PDT).
  • Winners for all awards will be announced on this website the morning of September 27th.

  1. My first contest entry ([DM03] Palace of Dawn) is up now!

  2. Well it looks great but cannot get past the first section! The laser prevents any exit. Help!!

  3. Hi, fellow bombers!

My map for the Dynamite Maps Contest #3 is a tribute to the excellent novel ‘Angels & Demons’ by Dan Brown. If you didn’t read it, don’t miss it, you won’t drop the book until you’ve finished!

Here’s the plot, freely adapted from the novel to fit Dynamite Jack:

“You’re Prof. Jack Langdon, the famous scholar. The Illuminati set a bomb in Vatican City. In chaos and paranoia, Vatican guards and CERN scientists will kill you on sight. Follow the lead of the four elements and find the antimatter before times runs out!”

As the story takes the symbologist Robert Langdon in a race against time and enemies, he runs through various monuments of Rome and Vatican City. So it occured to me that it could be a nice idea for the ‘Architecture’ theme of DM03.

In the novel, the four natural elements (Earth, Air, Water and Fire) play an important role, linked to some monuments (I won’t say more for those of you who don’t know the story), so you’ll find this reference in my map (with a little imagination effort, I admit).

Like in my DM02 map, you won’t find mutant spiders or computer cartridges, but some lasers, certainly! This is probably my least challenging map to date, but this time I decided to focus on esthetics to stick to the theme.

    I hope you’ll like it! =)

    Major Pob

  4. Hi guys and gals

An easy one from me, too. burning down the house – destructing architecture roof to basement. See how well the fire-fighting installation works!

    cheers T.H.F. Paul

  5. Hmm, not too many contenders so far, and mostly the European Championship.

Anyway, I apply for the “almost Just Jack” award with “The Castle”, a very short yet kafkaesque study on the simple but mazeish architecture of office buildings. It’s “aJJ” since Jack cannot bomb enem^H^H^Hdutyful officers as long as they sit in their cubicles and later it’s plain suicide. Morale of story: once you got your files, try to walk off without making any noise!

    enjoy, thf

  6. I didn’t know what was the “Just Jack” award, thank you thfpaul! So I guess my map Angels & Demons is also an “almost Just Jack” one, since you can complete it without killing anybody but the scientist at the altar. ;)

And as I wrote on the DJ forum, I enjoyed “The Castle” but indulged myself and killed everybody. Uh uh uh! ^_^

  7. wow, geraldnola’s dreamscape is breathtaking! he already did some gorgeous maps, but this is six of five stars!

    • I agree, I just played it and it’s visually magnificent as well as nicely challenging. There’s a huge work on forms and lightings, and the pixel “dreams” outside the map are funny (although you can only see them on the preview screen). 5 stars well deserved!

  8. Yikes! Major pob is right.
I forgot to update my Story in the description that explains how the Cat is the ‘Architect’ of the Psycodelic Dreamscape and you are but a mouse trying to escape. (Hence the Cat artwork outside the ‘Maze’ )

Can I fix that or is too late now that the map has been shared?

    • Well, it’s a pretty free variaton on the theme of architecture, yet it reminds of the buildings of Antoni Gaudi in Barcelona or of the Hundertwasserhaus. BTW the name Friedensreich Regentag Dunkelbunt Hundertwasser translates as Peaceful Rainyday Darkcolorful Hundredwaters. Anyway, I also thought of Gaudi and his Sagrada Familia when I read architecture but this is weirder than Park Güell (which anybody should visit who wants to get an idea of weirdness).

      excellent!

    • :) And thank you for the compliments guys! I hope people have fun playing it as much as I had fun making it

  9. YES! I just made it without dying. The zombie and lasers area is hot. Not in 5 minutes like you Gerald, but I preferred to sacrifice time for safety. And a little luck helped, too.

Unfortunately there seems to be no way to add the intro text once the map is online. If you want to add any modification, you’ve got to submit it again and thus lose all the votes.
I know it because once I wanted to add the flavor texts I wrote for the forum directly into my maps Beta Orionis and Solaris Starbase; I asked tankete and he told me that as far as he knew it was not possible. I didn’t bother Phil but I’m quite sure tankete’s right. =/

    • My God Major Pob! You are a Mad Man!
No deaths and under 7 minutes! WoW! Very Nice! I salute you sir!

Oh well, The Story description would have been a nice touch but I’m not gonna worry to much about it. As long as people enjoy playing it i’ll be happy. :)

  10. This contest ended up being a lot smaller than the first two, but the competition is brutal. These are all excellent levels!

Although I’ve noticed that my level still doesn’t have an average rating. Has it gone unnoticed, or is it just that hard to complete?

  11. I’ve been traveling and haven’t had the opportunity to play many levels recently, but all these comments are getting me pretty excited. Can’t wait to see what you all have created!

    • >My God Major Pob! You are a Mad Man!
      That’s for sure, I’m afraid… ;)

      >No deaths and under 7 minutes! WoW! Very Nice! I salute you sir!
Thanks! This morning I played it again in speed-run (without fetching all crystals and chips), and it’s fun too! =)

      >Has it gone unnoticed, or is it just that hard to complete?
Unfortunately, I think you placed the bar too high with your laser and zombie puzzle: I tried and tried many options, but didn’t manage to pass the first room. <=/
For a contest you should build easier maps (I didn't say easy), otherwise people will just give up and play something else. I did, although I'm quite a stubborn player, so casual players will just try once or twice and forget it.

      • I probably should have made it a bit easier, since it’s a contest entry, but that’s the trouble with puzzle maps. They ALL seem easy when you already know the solution. A hint: pay attention to your light sources. Anything in a room that’s bright enough to move a zombie is almost certainly necessary to solve its puzzle.
